Project Overview
The proposed Industrial Township Development Zone at Sooriyawewa is a strategic initiative by the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) to promote agro-based, dry-based, and knowledge-driven industries. Located in Sooriyawewa and Sewanagala Divisional Secretariats, the site spans approximately 415 hectares and benefits from its close proximity to the Hambantota Seaport (approximately 35 km) and Mattala International Airport (approximately 19 km), with direct access via the Southern Expressway.

- Promote high-value, export-oriented and import-substitution industries
- Enable self-sustaining township with housing, transport, and urban amenities
- Encourage educational, sports, and leisure-related investments
- Leverage strategic location near seaport, airport, and expressway
Project Details
- Location: Sooriyawewa (Hambantota District) and Sewanagala (Monaragala District)
- Land Extent: ~415 ha (Sooriyawewa – 177 ha; Weliwewayaya – 73 ha; Pending Transfer – 165 ha)
- Ownership: Board of Investment of Sri Lanka
- Land Use Potential: Agro-based and dry industries (Type B), IT parks, education, sports, residential, and leisure zones
Infrastructure & Facilities
- Road Access: Adjoins Sooriyawewa–Meegahajandura main road; connected via Southern Expressway
- Power Supply: 5 MVA available initially; 50 MVA from Sooriyawewa Grid Substation by 2024/25
- Water Supply: 200 m³/day currently; 5,000 m³/day expected post-completion of Ruhunupura Scheme (2024)
- Wastewater Disposal: Low water consumption industries; potential for Common Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Solid Waste Management: Integrated facility proposed based on EIA recommendations
- Current Land Condition: Undulating shrub forest with scattered trees
