Wathupitiwala Export Processing Zone (EPZ)

Located in the Gampaha District of Sri Lanka’s Western Province, the Wathupitiwala EPZ was established in 1999. It spans 123 acres, with 67.84 acres allocated for industrial use, and is situated approximately 42 km from Colombo. Positioned near the Colombo–Kandy highway and the proposed expressway, the zone offers strong connectivity and easy access to national transport networks.

The zone accommodates over 10,000 workers, with a majority being female. It is designed for low-polluting industries, and features include a common wastewater treatment system, stormwater disposal, landscaping, and a solid waste disposal facility. Water is sourced from multiple suppliers including the Ranpokunagama water scheme, tube wells, and transported supply, totaling 1,450 m³/day. The power requirement is met through an 8 MVA grid substation, and fiber-optic-based telecommunication ensures high-speed connectivity. The zone includes 24/7 security, fire protection systems, and an administrative complex housing BOI services and utility management units.
